CURIOSITY OPENS DOORS
These are the answers we'd share over a glass of Txakolí.
Who are Basquelanders?
Basquelanders is a boutique travel company offering intimate access to the culinary traditions of the Basque Country, founded by Gaizka Picaza and Carlos Lertxundi. Through long-standing relationships with chefs, winemakers, and artisans, we design journeys shaped around you, not a pre-set itinerary.
What's included in a Basquelanders trip?
Your accommodation, all transport within the region, every planned experience, and the meals on your program. Flights are not included, and some evenings are left free for you to eat where you like. We tell you exactly what falls outside before you book, so nothing surprises you later
Who will be with us during our trip?
Gaizka, our founder, hosts every journey himself. This is hosting, not guiding. He is not a guide hired for the day. He opens the doors, sits at the table, and stays with you from the first morning to the last. He holds two university degrees, speaks five languages, studied wine marketing at UC Davis, and is WSET certified. He spent years at one of the great txakoli wineries of Euskadi, and served as president of the wine tourism association of Bizkaia. A small team works behind him, so nothing is left to chance.
Can I travel on my own?
Yes, and many do. Our groups are small and the meals are shared, so by the second day nobody is really traveling alone. Traveling solo does carry a supplement, since a room costs the same whether one or two people sleep in it. We give you that figure upfront, with no surprises later.
Can you accommodate dietary requirements or mobility needs?
Yes. Please let us know any dietary, medical, or mobility considerations when planning your journey, so we can shape your experiences accordingly.
What's the best time of year to visit the Basque Country?
Late spring and fall (autumn) are our favorites. May and June bring long days and green hills. September and October bring the harvest, when the region is at its most alive. Summer is warm and busy. Winter is quiet and it belongs to the table. Whatever time of year you choose to visit, we’re sure you’ll enjoy it.
Can you help me trace family history in the Basque Country?
Yes. We have experience helping guests of Basque descent reconnect with ancestral villages and, where possible, distant relatives. Let us know your family background when you get in touch, and we'll see what's possible.
Do I need to know about wine?
The only thing you need to know about wine is whether you like it or not! Some of our travelers know a great deal; others arrive with nothing but curiosity – but both leave with more than they expected.
How far in advance should I book?
Because our journeys involve limited-access venues and personal relationships, we recommend reaching out several months ahead, especially if you are hoping to travel during harvest season (mid-September to the end of October).
Do you help with flights and travel to the Basque Country?
Our focus is on the experience once you arrive, though we're happy to advise on logistics and can recommend how best to plan your travel to the region. For example, if you arrive at Madrid Airport, we can advise and even arrange for travel to the Basque Country.
